Choosing a Coach

With the popularity of specialty coaching in the last few years, it has become increasingly easy to find a coaching practitioner of any persuasion. Because this is true, it has also become true that choosing a has become much more difficult. When coaches were fewer and far between, finding one to work with was the issue, however in just a few short years the problem has become, finding a coach that can meet your needs.

I attend many networking groups and I hear people call themselves business coaches life coaches, life and business coaches, marketing coaches, productivity coaches and on it goes. The word “coach” has become synonymous with anyone who provides instruction. Making a mistake in choosing a coach however, can be a costly affair and can actually damage your business or personal life.

So how does someone choose the right coach, that suits their needs, personality and helps them reach the goals they have in mind?

There are a few things that you can do to choose wisely. First, define the outcome. If you spend three months with a coach, what do you want to get out of that coaching time. Knowing that helps you choose someone who can address those needs.

Second, choose a coach that has chosen a specialty. What do I mean by specialty? If you visit a coaching web site and they do life coaching,business coaching, grief coaching, and several other areas of coaching, they are using a shot gun approach to their practice. They are everything to everyone. The danger in that is they may not be able to address the outcome you are trying to achieve.

Third, check their credentials. At the very least their experience should render them an expert in what they are coaching, but ideally they should have a certification for coaching. There are a few organizations that certify coaches, and since the industry is really not regulated there is not just one body who is recognized as “the” certification to have. However, if the individual has taken some time to get a certification it means they are interested in building credibility.

Beyond the coaching credential, make sure that the individual has some credibility, either through extensive experience or education or both, that qualifies them to coach you. For instance, if you hire a business coach and they have a degree in early childhood education and virtually no experience in business, how helpful will they be to your goals. Don’t be afraid to ask people what their credentials are, if they are good at what they do, they will be happy to share. Hopefully that information will be on their Web site.

And finally, take some time to interview your coach based on the outcomes that you want to achieve. Find out specifically what they will do to help you achieve those outcomes, and if they can’t satisfy your needs, move on. The bottom line is, that your coach should meet your needs. Even if you are not entirely sure what you really want, just identifying the kinds of things you want to discuss with a coach will help you choose someone that can address those needs. Coaching can be expensive, and you want to be sure that you find the coach that is going to meet all your needs. A good coach will be honest and tell you if they don’t specialize in something, beware of those who tell you they can handle anything.

Coaching is a wonderful way to get clarity in your life or business. Finding the right coach for you will make all the difference in getting the most benefit from coaching. Take time to choose your coach wisely and then create a Good Relationship with her so that she is able to give you the most objective advice, based on your needs and goals.
