The Best American Spiritual Writing $3.95 In his introduction to this volume, President Jimmy Carter writes that The Best American Spiritual Writing "approaches the writing of both poetry and prose as a spiritual discipline, a way to explore the mysteries of the soul and the soul’s relationship with God." As always, editor Philip Zaleski has assembled a wide-ranging and wonderfully eclectic collection that delves headlong into that spiritual discipline, looking to inspire, provoke, and offer insight into modern spirituality and religion. Here you will find Walter Isaacson’s brilliant and provocative portrait of Einstein’s religious life–a cross between his parents’ secularism, his native Judaism, and his Catholic grade-school education. Drawing from his own experience of trying to inhabit multiple worlds, Noah Feldman examines the difficulties facing faith communities as they adhere to tradition yet also strive to be modern, in "Orthodox Paradox." When "Meeting the Chinese in St. Paul," Natalie Goldberg, with the help of a broken rhinoceros fan, grapples with this question: how should I live, knowing the world is a confusing place? Pico Iyer weighs in on his tranquil retreat, the holiest place in Japan; Oliver Sacks gives a moving account of a man with retrograde amnesia, striving for a meaningful life devoid of memory; and Ursula K. Le Guin passionately explains, as only she can, the appeal and subtle morality of A. E. Housman’s "A Shropshire Lad: XXXII." Committed to literary excellence, this "invaluable collection" (Library Journal) also features poetry from distinguished voices such as Wendell Berry, Maxine Kumin, John Updike, and Charles Wright. As Zaleski writes in his foreword, The Best American Spiritual Writing 2008 proves that the writing in this edition is a stirring "medium for contemplating, via the things of the flesh, the things of the spirit." |

Spiritual Development $27.73 Drawing on the global research and field-building efforts of Search Institutes Center for Spiritual Development in Childhood and Adolescence, this volume frames a new, deeper dialogue about the intersections between youth development and spiritual development. Contributors explore ways to integrate spiritual development and youth development in order to strengthen theory, research, and practice. They ask: OL {list-style: disc} P: {margin-left 60px} How do young people develop their deepest, fundamental commitments? How do they find their place in their family, community, world, and universe? How do they come to terms with issues of meaning, purpose, and identity beyond themselves? These are, at their core, spiritual development questions. They are also critical issues in adolescent development. They are the wellspring of some of the best within young people and humanity, and the source of some of the greatest atrocities in society when the answers lead to alienation, hatred, or violence. The past decade has seen an explosion in interest in spiritual development within youth development and related fields. National youth-serving systems are beginning to ask how they can effectively address these questions in a society that has become increasingly diverse and pluralistic. And the growth of positive, community-based youth development provides a platform for examining these issues within the context of an overall commitment to healthy, holistic development among all young people. This volume is a valuable addition to the field. This is the 118th volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions. The result is a unique resource presenting thoughtful, multi-faceted approaches to helping our youth develop into responsible, stable, well-rounded citizens. |

Spiritual World $5.79 Kahlil Gibran, (1883-1931) best selling author and spiritual guide, was a man in search of himself and his place in the world; he wrote from longing and created beauty.Writer and painter, based in the USA, his life was his material. An immigrant from Lebanon, he wrote with one eye on his homeland; and with a restless questioning spirit. As one of his teachers records, ‘he had an impetuous soul, a rebellious mind and an eye mocking everything it sees.’Kahlil was born into a Christian Maronite family in Bsharri, set in the mountainous regions of North Lebanon; and under control of the Ottoman empire. We hear of a solitary and thoughtful child, who delighted in his natural surroundings. Growing up in poverty, his only education was the visit of the priest, until troubled family circumstances led to upheaval and relocation in the USA – without his father. Here Gibran experienced loss. His sister, half-brother and mother died before he was twenty; as he wrote: ‘Ever has it been, that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.’ But here also he experienced patronage from a succession of mother-figures who were to help nurture his life as an artist and writer, introducing him to the Boston literary circles.Gibran would never fit in. He described himself as a ‘fragment’, and as one always wondering where he belonged in the world. ‘The human heart cries out for hope,’ he wrote. ‘The human soul implores us for deliverance. But we do not heed their cries, for we neither hear nor understand. But the man who hears and understands we call mad, and flee from him.’ The madman was a figure who haunted Gibran throughout his life; naked, vulnerable and without a mask for protection against the destructive powers around him. ‘Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother,’ he wrote – perhaps as much to reassure himself as others.Kahlil Gibran wished to write small books that could be read in one sitting and carried in the pocket. Between 1918 -1926, he wrote four such books, and these were his first in English: The Madman (1918); the Forerunner (1920); Sand and Foam (1926) and The Prophet (1923). The first three are collections of parables and aphorisms, which in true Eastern style, draw on a world of kings, hermits, saints, slaves, deserts, animals that talk and wind that laughs. The Prophet, which was to become enduringly popular, is different; a prose piece which is longer and partly auto-biographical. In the story, a young man prepares to leave for his homeland; but first he must say goodbye to those he has lived amongst for the previous twelve years. The book is his farewell speech, touching on love, friendship, children, joy, sorrow and much else besides. Summing up the message of the book, Gibran said this: ‘The whole prophet is saying one thing: ‘You are far far greater than you know – and all is well.’Only in his private letters do we get a glimpse of the man for whom all was not well. Fiercely individual, he found no end |

Our Spiritual Crisis $3.95 Bringing years of scholarship to his thoughtful argument, Michael Nagler contends that many of the social, cultural, and even economic problems now faced by American society today are direct results of an overemphasis on material consumption, which in turn reflects spiritual poverty. These ills, he posits, spring from a false way of looking at the world – namely, from considering material things to be fundamental, and consciousness merely derivative. He advocates a return to the ancient Eastern spiritual view that consciousness is fundamental – that it is the basic stuff of the universe, and matter and energy merely ephemeral forms or appearances. In developing this conception and applying it to the nation’s social problems, Nagler explains how readers can best oppose war, consumerism, commercialism, and scientism, and heal the spiritual deficit many feel today. |

Relationships as a Spiritual Journey $17.84 A Course in Miracles is a contemporary spiritual teaching which claims that the timeless quest for God is best accomplished right in our own back yard — in our ordinary human relationships. There we can find the Eternal Beloved we have sought since time began. Yet to find this real Love in our relationships, says the Course, our relationships must go through a profound transformation, a transformation that will take the form of a journey. This is the journey from special relationships, based on the pursuit of individual specialness, to holy relationships, based on the pursuit of a truly common goal. This is not an overnight change, for this journey, according to the Course, is the spiritual journey itself. |

A Beautiful Offering: Returning God’s Love with Your Life $4.99 From The Publisher:Drawing wisdom from the Beatitudes, A Beautiful Offering is a call for women to live their lives as grateful offerings to the Father. For many years Angela Thomas thought of the Beatitudes as a list of Gotta Be’s, as in: Gotta be meek. Gotta be merciful. And when she compared her life to the standard they set, she always felt that she came up short. But through God’s great mercy, she has come to see this passage instead as a roster of When You Are’s. When you are meek, there is a spiritual inheritance. When you are merciful, you will be shown mercy. This shift in thinking has led Thomas to understand that God does not require perfection, but rather our gracious obedience. In His eyes, our lives–complete with mistakes, blemishes, and imperfections–are A Beautiful Offering.About The Author:Angela Thomas is the mother of four children, speaker, teacher, and best-selling author of Prayers for the Mother to Be, Prayers for Mothers of Newborns, Tender Mercy for a Mother’s Soul, Do You Think I’m Beautiful?, and A Beautiful Offering. Angela has a passion for encouraging women, who are drawn to her because of her honesty, humor, conversational style, and storytelling ability. A Book of Life $19.99 For all the cycles of life, best-selling author Rabbi Michael Strassfeld presents traditional Jewish teachings as a guide to behavior and values. Where the tradition is replete with rituals (for example, the Sabbath), he describes them and shows how they can enrich spiritual living. Where rituals are sparse or nonexistent (for example, returning home at the end of the workday), he suggests new ones gleaned from his own study and experience. Strassfeld also brings the principles of ?insight meditation? to Jewish life, using this practice to recover and reconstruct Judaism’s spiritual dimension. He describes a Judaism that encourages within us a spiritual awareness as we participate in both traditional Jewish practices and the mundane activities of daily life. By engaging with Jewish tradition in ways that recapture its original kavanah, or intention, we will, Strassfeld maintains, achieve the two fundamental goals of Judaism?to become better human beings and to be in God’s presence. |

A Feminine Manifesta $18.95 An exploration of how women have inadvertently disempowered and sabotaged themselves by being their own worst critics. On a broader scale the book speaks to how women’’s collective self-denigration as a gender has not only diluted our influence in a world in desperate need of our social, spiritual and political contributions, but has also prevented us from uniting in ways that would benefit the entire planet. In order to support women in accessing the very best of who they are, their confident, joyous, wise and courageous selves, the book offers women three simple steps that will allow them to reduce the optional stress in their lives as they step into their strongest selves and access the joy that is their birthright. |

A Gentle Creature and Other Stories $7.97 In these stories, Dostoevsky explores both the figure of the dreamer divorced from reality, and also his own ambiguous attitude toward utopianism, themes central to his great novels. In White Nights, the apparent idyll of the dreamer’’s romantic fantasies disguises profound loneliness and estrangement from living life. A Gentle Creature and The Dream of a Ridiculous Man show how withdrawal from reality can end in spiritual desolation as well as moral indifference, and how, in Dostoevsky’’s view, the tragedy of the alienated individual can only be resolved by the rediscovery of a sense of compassion and responsibility toward other people. No other edition brings together these specific stories–which are most interesting when read alongside one another–and the new translations capture all the power and lyricism of Dostoevsky’’s writing at its best. |
